Our guide will welcome us and explain the route ahead. The ride from Cusco to Puno will offer incredible landscapes and rich cultural stops.
Our first visit will be Andahuaylillas, located 40 kilometers southeast of Cusco. We will enter a 17th-century church known as the Sistine Chapel of the Andes. The interior holds gold-covered altars, murals, and carved ceilings. We will admire detailed religious paintings blending Andean and European styles.
Next, we will travel 90 kilometers to the archaeological site of Raqchi. The Incas built this complex in honor of Viracocha, their supreme deity. We will explore the massive central temple, stone walls, and ceremonial spaces. Around the site, we will see colcas, Inca storage buildings used for grain and supplies.
After the visit, we will continue our day's tour with a stop in Sicuani for lunch. We will enjoy a buffet with regional Andean dishes made from fresh local ingredients. The restaurant provides a relaxing atmosphere to recharge. This break will also offer a moment to rest and prepare for the highlands ahead.
We will then ascend to La Raya Pass, located at 4,335 meters above sea level. This is the highest point of the Ruta del Sol. We will step out to take pictures of the snowy peaks and grazing alpacas. The surrounding mountains create one of the most scenic moments of the day.
Our final cultural stop will be Pukara, 106 kilometers from La Raya. We will visit the local museum featuring pre-Inca artifacts and ceramics. The exhibits show ancient sculptures of animals and ritual objects. We will learn about the roots of Andean civilization and symbolic figures like the Torito de Pukara.
